7 Tips On How To Meditate

Have you ever tried to meditate & felt like you weren’t doing it “correctly” or getting the “results” you were looking for? I know I felt this way when I began meditating some years ago. I found myself frustrated, upset & disappointed because I thought I wasn’t doing it “right”. My mind would go off on a tangent, I would move around a lot to try to get comfortable, and I simply thought shouldn’t I be feeling all zen right now. Well after reading about it, practicing different styles & speaking to others who practice meditating daily, I found 7 things in common that I want to share with you. These 7 tips on how to meditate effectively will definitely have you well on your way to a more balanced & peaceful life. I promise. Now lets get to it!

Tip #1- Consistency. You’ve got to be consistent if you want to see results. And that’s with everything in life. Consistency is key because if you commit to meditating everyday or twice a day, I promise you will see results. Because see it’s not about doing it right when you are new to it, it’s about just making the effort to do it. You could commit to say twice a day, once in the morning before you head out for the day & once before bedtime. The more you do it, you find yourself becoming more peaceful, more balanced, more relaxed & in control.

Tip #2- A Quiet Place. Find a quiet space where it is peaceful. It could be a bedroom, your car, your deck or patio, your bathroom; any place that is quiet for you. A place quiet enough so that you are able to hear. Now you may be saying, “Brown Vegan Goddess just said a place quiet enough so I can hear? Hear what?” You are listening for yourself, your higher self, or God, or Source, or whatever you call your higher power. And that’s the difference between prayer & meditation. In prayer you are talking to God, but in meditation you are listening to God.

Tip #3- Enhancers. Enhancers for meditation include stones, incense, singing bowls, herbs, healing rods, etc. These items do just that…enhance. They can help you get into that zone or space you need to be in to effectively meditate. Various crystals & stones enhance meditation (i.e. quartz & amethyst) just by holding them while you meditate or placing them on your chakras while meditating. Incense cleanse the space & the mind for meditating. Singing bowls help by bringing your frequency where it needs to be for meditation.

Tip #4- Focus/Mindfulness. During meditation you want to focus the mind. Make it still. Be mindful of your mind if that makes sense. You want to clear your mind of all distractions. So I recommend no tv, internet or social media before meditating. Images have a way of sticking, which is why imagination is so powerful. So make sure your mind is clear. If you find yourself drifting into other thoughts, gently acknowledge them by smiling & saying “not at this time…Peace of mind now” & refocus on your breathing.

Tip #5- Breathing. This is probably the most important tip along with consistency. The breath is spirit & you always want to be one with it & focus on it. So as you meditate listen to the breath. Let it guide you into deeper meditation. The breath is what assists the mind, body & spirit into perfect balance. Inhale deeply allowing the belly to expand with each inhalation & exhale completely to where the belly completely deflates. Listen. God is speaking.

Tip #6- No right way. Don’t beat yourself up about not “doing it right”. Truth be told there is no right way. Meditating can be done walking, sitting, laying, or standing. It can be done alone or in groups. It can be done with or without someone guiding you. The main thing is to be consistent, quiet, mindful/focused, & breathing…and it doesn’t hurt to have a few meditation enhancers.

Tip #7- Just Meditate. So simple, so easy. That’s it!

With so much going on in our personal lives, in the U.S. & around the globe, you can easily become overwhelmed and stressed out. For me personally, I have seen more than enough police brutality, killing, injustice, ignorance & hate to last a lifetime. I mean I am worn out as black woman in America. If we aren’t God, we damn sure have been carrying the weight of the world on our shoulders since the beginning of time like God.

And since we are Goddesses, it is highly beneficial for you to know how to heal yourself & love yourself. So real quick, I want to give you some gems to help you deal with and cope with the stressors of life. These things always help and work for me, and I hope they will work for you too.

  1. Verbalize: This means talking it out to someone who you consider to be wise counsel & that you trust. This can be a friend, sibling, spouse, parent, elder, or professional. It helps to verbalize how you are feeling and what you are feeling to someone because we are connected and we thrive on being in contact with other huemans. Their positive energy will balance out the negative energy of stress that you feel. And be sure to thank them for their time, energy and space they made available to you. It doesn’t hurt to give them a gift of appreciation as well.
  2. Write: Any one who knows me, knows I’m a huge advocate for writing things down. Get you a journal, notebook, piece of paper, whatever; something to write what you are feeling down. The whole point is to get it (stress) out of you.
  3. Get Out/Go In: So getting out is pretty obvious. Get out into Mother Earth. Allow her healing vibrations to balance out the negative energy, because you know it’s not about removing negative or opposite energy. It’s always about balance in EVERYTHING. Go walking on a nature trail. If you live close by a body of water go there. Take off your shoes and walk in the grass or the dirt or sand. Being sure to  breathe deeply in through your nose & out through your mouth gently. If you are into yoga do that outdoors barefoot. It’ll change your life!   4. Meditate/Pray: This ones self-explanatory. I also wrote about how to meditate a while back. Look through the archives or type it into the search bar to find it.
  5. Affirming Thoughts: This just means think well & be well. Positive, self-affirming thoughts have a major impact on our life because what we think becomes our reality. We have to remind ourselves how strong we are, how deserving of all things good we are, and how powerful beyond measure we are.

Some events in our life will require that we do all 5 of these at the same damn time, more than once! I’ve had to over the past month and a half. The stress of working in healthcare, being a mama and wife, building a brand, traveling, trying to lose weight in my midsection, etc. You can see why knowing how to heal myself & de-stress is crucial. This post has been a long time coming. I’ve wanted to share this information with as many people as I possibly can for a while now. So I’ve made post here and there on Instagram & videos on Youtube in regards to self care, but never listed out in black and white things you can do starting today to heal yourself.

With cancer rates, diabetes diagnoses, obesity numbers and heart disease rates sky rocketing annually, it’s important that we pay attention & realize that this is not NORMAL. Sickness is not NORMAL. Going to the doctor for things that are very much so preventable, is not NORMAL. We need to understand that we have the power to be healthy and stay healthy until our bodies go back to Mother (Earth).

There’s a book that I’ve reviewed on here a while back, titled Enlightened Eating by Caroline Marie Dupont. I recommend anyone and everyone who is interested in living healthy, healing themselves and changing their life to get this book! The information given is written so beautifully and complete. It definitely made me think deeper about how I eat & things I can improve on in my life as it relates to eating.

Did you know health is largely related to what we eat, or don’t eat? Our immune system starts in the gut, about 80% I believe. That’s huge! So don’t you think in order to heal yourself you must first start internally? Because we know beauty & health must come from the inside out. We have the power to prevent disease & we have the power to heal ourselves from any disease from the inside out, if we know how. And that’s what I plan to do today. I want to help get you started on to the path of healing. So let’s get started.

These are my 10 things that you can do starting TODAY to heal from the inside out! You ready?

1. DETOX. Over the years we have collected so much waste, pollution, weight, negative energy & low vibrations that have caused the body to be in constant defense mode. This weakens the immune system, the mind and the spirit. Detoxing allows us to rid ourselves of these things on a regular basis. That’s why it’s important to do this once a week, once a month, at the start of every season, every year. Some things you can do during your detox is cut off all electronics (unplug), drink at least a gallon of water a day, eat only raw fruits & vegetables, juice, take a detox supplement or tonic, and/or take time off work. Check out Dr.Sebi products too for cleansing and detoxing. Also, if you are in the Atlanta area check out Living Foods Institute. They are all about helping you heal holistically.

2. Meditate/Pray/Chant. Twice a day for at least 15minutes at a time. Before you start your day get up and meditate,chant & pray. Before you go to sleep get down on the floor meditate, chant and pray. This will give your mind a chance to power down & rest. Your brain is the body’s computer, and just like a computer it needs time off. Studies have shown that people who meditate regularly live longer healthier lives than those who don’t.

3. Reset Your Body. This means cleanse. It’s almost like detox but over a longer period of time. Detoxing is similar to fasting, you only want to do it for a day or two. Cleansing is like a week to a month. Cleansing includes: epsom salt baths with essential oils, eating only organic fresh fruits, vegetables, seeds and nuts, drinking only water or fresh pressed juices. A reset is just that. You are resetting or training your body gently to heal itself, because now it doesn’t have to work so hard to push through the gunk and build-up that was accumulated over the years.

4. Move. You must move in order to get things flowing. The fluids in your body should act as healing waters for every organ in your body. Your lymphatic system & circulatory system does that for you automatically if you are giving it what it needs to do that. So doing some form of exercise is key a minimum of 45 minutes a day 5 days a week. Exercise helps with getting those fluids moving and circulating in the body to get them where they are needed most, our vital organs! Yoga, Walking, Jogging, Kickball, skating, dancing or biking is perfect. Just MOVE!

5. Laugh Often & Loud. Laughter is medicine. Literally, laughing releases those feel good hormones and those high vibrations out to the universe. Those vibrations tell the universe that I want more of these feel good vibrations and guess what? The universe sends them to you! Can you believe that? I mean we are truly living & breathing vibrations of atoms. So watch your favorite shows that make you laugh. Mine is Martin:-) I could watch those episodes everyday and still laugh at something I didn’t catch before.

6. Write It Out. Do you have a notebook lying around? If so that’s perfect! You now have yourself a journal so get to writing. Writing out your thoughts, goals, visions and affirmations helps to put those things in motion for you. Again the universe responds to the energy you put out there, and where your attention goes is where energy flows. So writing out what you want is key in healing yourself.

7. Drink. 1 Gallon of water a day. Can’t get more simple than that. You will have better skin, better fluidity in joints, improved mobility & more energy. Our bodies are made up of mostly water, so give it more.

8. Reconnect with your Mother. Our Mother Earth is waiting for us to reconnect with her. Some of us have strayed so far away. We’ve become so busy with our careers, money, electronics, tv, gossip, etc. We have forgotten the importance of our connection to her. We come from her and when our flesh dies we will return to her. But while we are living, she nurtures us with food, air, water, fire, and spirit. Reconnect with her to show appreciation, love and respect. Plant a garden, walk barefoot often to exchange energy, go to a stream/lake/creek/pond/ocean/river and talk to her, give her gifts (plant a tree, drop a piece of fruit or vegetable in the water and give thanks), hug a tree (seriously), gaze at the moon/stars/sun/clouds, close your eyes and listen to her speak.

9. Forgive. If anyone has every hurt you in any way you must forgive. Holding on to feelings, thoughts, or people that don’t empower you are only going to cause illness. Several books have been written on this, how various emotions and feelings can present themselves as a particular illness over a period of time, from cancer to diabetes to ulcers or arthritis.

10. Adopt a Plant-Based Lifestyle. I saved this for last because this is the single most important advice I can give to anyone. Eating a diet high in raw fruits and vegetables is the fountain of youth and vitality. Studies upon studies have been done proving this time and time again. One study in particular is the China Study. I recommend you read this book also if you have any doubts about the effectiveness diet has on the overall health of an individual. If you are truly serious about healing yourself from the inside out of any dis-ease adopting a plant-based lifestyle is vital. I really can’t stress this enough.

Oregano Oil

*Oreganum vulgare*

Oregano oil contains two natural antiseptic compounds, carvacol and thymol. It’s a natural anti-inflammatory & can help heal skin wounds and muscle strains. It’s a great disinfectant for a “sick room”. It’s a perennial of the mint family, and native to the Mediterranean.

Possible Benefits: Natural disinfectant and antimicrobial – May help you beat a cold or flu – May promote healing of skin wounds. *Side note: I remember hearing a while back to rub this oil on the bottom of your feet, chest & head before going to bed if you feel yourself coming down with something. By morning you should be good as new. Well, I will say this is truth! Just yesterday I rubbed my hubby down with this stuff after he got home feeling pretty bad and by morning he was 100%. Anytime any one of my kids, myself or hubby feel like we’re coming down with something I go to my cabinet of herbs and get to work. You have to be your own physician. You know you and your family better than anyone, so protect it and take care of it. Seek out knowledge, then use it and share it!

Uses: For an active infection, take up to 6 capsules daily for 2 weeks. Mix 5-10 drops in liquid and drink up to 2 cups daily. Place a few drops directly on warts or skin wounds. Use daily until healed.

Make sure you purchase true oregano (oregano vulgare), not the spice you typically get at the supermarket which is usually a form of marjoram. That’s great for pizza or tomato sauce, but it doesn’t have the same potency.
